Mozambique: Chapo promises to solve outstanding wage problems

. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday promised that his government will solve pending wage problems in the public administration. Speaking to a meeting of public employees in Maputo, Chapo admitted delays in paying wages and overtime payments. But he claimed that progress has been made thanks to the collective effort of the government machine and the individual commitment of each public official. “In terms of political, economic and social stability, we have managed to resume the routine of normal work”, he claimed. “This was only possible because each of you did his or her part”. Chapo recalled that he has held a series of meetings with public employees across the country. “I have gone from north to south, meeting with colleagues in all the provinces”, he said, “and today, in Maputo, we are concluding this cycle of meetings. Without this collective effort, it would not have been possible to stabilise the country”. He recalled that the government had recognised the debts it owes for unpaid overtime, particularly for education and health workers, dating back to 2023 and 2024. “We have begun partial payment”, he said. “But we are fully aware of the need to pay off the debts that are still owing”. Although the largest number of beneficiaries are in the education and health services, other sectors of the public administration have the same right “and they will not be forgotten”. As for the delayed allowances (such as for shift work), Chapo said the government is taking measures to pay them off in phases. “The challenges exist and are well known”, he said. “But the central message I want to leave is one of trust and commitment: trust in the work we are doing together, and commitment of the government to solve the pending problems gradually and to value the public officials as a pillar of national development
