Mozambique: Chapo announces start of National Dialogue for 10 September

Image
. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo announced on Saturday that the “inclusive national dialogue” will begin on 10 September. Speaking at a rally in the Maputo municipal district of Katembe, Chapo urged all segments of society to take part in the dialogue. “All of us, as Mozambicans – political parties with or without parliamentary seats, civil society, academics, workers, peasants, young people, women, our friends in the mass media, all are invited to participate with ideas, so that one day we have elections in Mozambique and, when they are over, the loser picks up the telephone and congratulates the winner, goes home and waits for the next elections”. Chapo thus made it clear that he regards the dialogue as a means of avoiding future post-election violence. He lamented the unrest and violence that had followed the declaration of the results of the October 2024 general elections – results that were widely regarded as fraudulent. South Africa claim historic quarter-final spot

Image
. South Africa reached their first ever Women’s World Cup quarter-final with an impressive 29-24 win over Italy at York Community Stadium. The Springbok Women will meet France – who are second in Pool D after thumping Brazil 84-5 – next Sunday to decide who goes through as group winners. “This is unreal, it is so emotional,” said head coach Swys de Bruin. “We have never made the quarters, we have never beaten Italy. “The nation is so much behind these girls. It is in our blood. We just love it. We try to copy our men’s teams, the sevens, the under-20s. We thought we must catch up now. Our girls were absolutely fantastic.” Player of the match Libbie Van Rensburg added: “This is massive. We spoke about changing history in South Africa for women’s rugby and we did that.” “Every single lady who is in the squad is part of making history and I think we really made South Africa proud.”

"separator" style="clear: both;"> . Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday promised that his government will solve pending wage problems in the public administration. Speaking to a meeting of public employees in Maputo, Chapo admitted delays in paying wages and overtime payments. But he claimed that progress has been made thanks to the collective effort of the government machine and the individual commitment of each public official. “In terms of political, economic and social stability, we have managed to resume the routine of normal work”, he claimed. “This was only possible because each of you did his or her part”. Chapo recalled that he has held a series of meetings with public employees across the country. “I have gone from north to south, meeting with colleagues in all the provinces”, he said, “and today, in Maputo, we are concluding this cycle of meetings. Without this collective effort, it would not have been possible to stabilise the country”. ...
